ESSENTIALS FOR PARENTS & STUDENTS
General Information and Expectations
DISCUSSION DAYS
Discussion Days are group meetings designed for meaningful dialogue, instruction, and practice based on the assignments the student completes during the intervening days.
-
For Omnibus courses, there are up to 4 days of individual assignments and activities interspersed with 2 weekly group meetings (in-person Discussion Days) of approximately 1.25 hours each. The Omnibus Discussion Days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.
-
For the Classical Composition, Lost Tools of Writing Levels 1-3, Rhetoric, or Senior Thesis courses, the format includes up to 3 days of individual writing exercises, punctuated with a weekly, in-person Discussion Day of approximately 1 hour, on either Tuesdays or Thursdays.
DAILY ASSIGNMENTS
Students complete daily at-home assignments and activities which I deliver through Google Classroom, typically in Google Docs or Templates. Students should possess moderate typing/keyboard skills in order to complete and submit their work via Google Classroom. Usually these assignments are completed and submitted ahead of a Discussion Day. This enables students to prepare for the discussion and allows me to grade and offer feedback for improvement prior to our meeting.
In addition to subject mastery, the daily assignments and other projects stress the fundamentals of logical thinking and critical analysis. They also provide practice in the process of writing. On average, Omnibus students should expect to complete 2 hours or so of daily reading, writing, and other preparation activities at home (at-home assignments on Discussion Days take proportionately less time). Writing and Rhetoric students should anticipate about an hour of writing related projects at home, 3 days per week. Thesis students should plan for more time spent in research and writing. For all courses, I post a Weekly Assignments Schedule on Fridays to help students organize their responsibilities for the following week and to prepare for their success in these.
EXPECTATIONS FOR PARENTS
The Omnibus, Writing, Rhetoric, and Thesis courses are rigorous programs in which diligent students thrive. However, to achieve that goal, parents should understand that it will involve a measure of their participation at home. Parents should plan not only to oversee the at-home assignments with their children but also to engage them in talking about the key topics that are raised. Parent participation at home is essential for this format to work properly. And at least weekly, parents should ask their children to open their Google Classroom and go over together the current assignments, communications, and grades. Finally, parents are also asked to help as able with volunteer supervision on campus to fulfill the host church's two-adult requirement.
GRADING
I evaluate each student's progress. Students should aim for 85% or better in all daily assignments, occasional quizzes and tests, writing projects, and other assigned activities, in addition to participation on Discussion Days. Grades are posted in each student's Google Classroom and reported after the end of each semester.
INTERNET
Students need reliable internet access for Google Classroom and Calendar to check for assignments, submit work, download material, and for evaluation. Google Classroom is also the means by which students communicate back and forth with their teacher and each other. Parents may access their student's Classroom via their Gmail account, and they should review their child's Google Classroom (assignments and grades) regularly.
BOOKS & MATERIALS
Students provide their own books and supplies. I provide additional materials in digital form (e.g., Google Docs, PDF, YouTube links) via Google Classroom. Students are responsible for completing all assignments by their due dates. They also are expected to bring their books, completed assignments, and other materials and supplies to each meeting. The teacher does not supply these.
